International Womens Day
Each year, the Calgary Single Mothers Society proudly marks International Women’sDay by honouring the strength, resilience, and contributions of single mothers in our community. This annual event is both a celebration and a call to action—bringing the community together to uplift women while addressing real and urgent needs.
With the generous support of community members, partners, and donors, CSMSawards three bursaries each year to single mothers facing financial hardship. Thesebursaries are designed to provide meaningful support across different life circumstancesand stages.
Over the years, our bursary focus has evolved in response to community needs:
● Year One: Two bursaries were awarded to single mothers advancing their education, and one bursary supported a single mother starting a new business.
● Year Two: Two bursaries supported single mothers launching or growing small businesses, and one bursary was awarded for educational advancement.
● Year Three: Two bursaries were provided to single mothers facing housing instability and risk of eviction, and one bursary supported a single mother pursuing further education.
In addition to bursaries, CSMS presents Community Recognition Awards to celebrate single mothers who are not only raising their families independently but are also giving back through volunteerism, leadership, advocacy, and community service. These awards honour the often-unseen contributions of single mothers who strengthen communities while navigating significant challenges.
Our International Women’s Day events also feature panel discussions and communityconversations, creating space to raise awareness about the lived realities of singlemotherhood. These panels highlight themes of resilience, struggle, healing, and empowerment, while amplifying the voices and experiences of single mothers themselves.
Through this annual initiative, CSMS aims to reduce barriers, recognize leadership, andfoster collective responsibility—reminding our community that when single mothers aresupported, families and communities thrive.
